Rare John Grimek Fons Iannelli Vintage Studio B&W Physique Portrait

Exceptional 1940s studio portrait of legendary bodybuilder John Grimek (1910-1998) by well known WWII era photographer Fons Iannelli (1919-1988). Iannelli worked for several publications in the 1940s (Life, Fortune, Collier’s, Saturday Evening Post, etc) and assume this image was for an editorial assignment, though we have not been able to track down a match to a magazine. This photo captures Grimek in a decidedly modernist studio image with the multi-title holding muscleman in a trademark split pose, easily holding a weighty barbell in his right hand while an earlier portrait of him looks on from the wall. A very artful composition. Size/Condition: 11”x14” DW fiber print with near matte surface. Some untouched dust specks and age-related toning. Photographer stamp to reverse, otherwise unmarked, undated. $500 purchase price includes domestic insured, Parcel Select USPS shipping. Please contact us for international rates. Note: This print was scanned in two passes and stitched together….it has a slight warm tone.
